Gifted and Gifted LD delight in learning...
- April 24, 2008
Gifted and Gifted LD equally take delight in learning and have a great thirst for knowledge.
Their love for learning is not general, but most often have passion areas. They advance in cognitive abilities, intellectual curiosity and divergent thinking. They have a keen sense of humor – love Monty Python and Mr. Bean for example.
Distinguishing hallmarks of “gifted learners” are their intense and sensitive character. Their minds are creative, able to process complex ideas, and energetically are in tune to their surroundings. Their gifted mind does not operate in the “norm”, they are the 2% of the population.
They are highly intuitive and empathetic. They are more like cats than dogs, meaning they are individualists and do not conform easily. They need like-minded friends.
Due to their sensitive nature and hyper perception, a standard classroom might be over-whelming - too loud, too bright and too distracting to focus. The higher the IQ the more uneven the profiles can be.
If they are gifted with a double label of “twice exceptional” their challenges are generally in basic arithmetic, reading and writing. Their advanced ability is ‘spatial ” – love LEGO. Their difficulties often result from undetected vision, auditory or sensory issues. Gifted is a spectrum and often has “special needs”.
