Established in 1993 by Denise Somerville-Quinn, Hon. B.A. Dance, University of Waterloo, SDA offers a variety of dance disciplines including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Acrobatic, Hip-Hop, Pre-dance movement and weekday Moms and Tots sessions. There are advanced classes for those intending on furthering their dance education through post-secondary studies. All Faculty members are qualified with many years of teaching experience. All younger teachers are former students of SDA with Fine Arts university degrees and certification through the regulatory body PAEC (Performing Arts Educators of Canada).
Somerville Dance Academy has three bright spacious studios with sprung wooden floors for safety. There are wall-length mirrors, mounted barres, change areas and washrooms. All studios are air-conditioned. Ample parking is available at 141 King Road.
Even if your child does not become a professional dancer, there are benefits from taking dance classes. Dance improves posture, develops coordination and is a healthy physical activity. Students also develop discipline in class and self-confidence from performing on stage during our annual recital. Since its inception, SDA has donated the recital proceeds to the Hospital for Sick Children.
Examinations are available and students are prepared, at the discretion of the teachers, to take exams through PAEC. Somerville Dance Academy also offers an award winning competitive program for more serious students.
